If you've been around for any length of time, you know that I'm a sucker for a good ol' family tradition.
But the traditions I love most aren't always centered around holidays or birthdays. They're the simple, anticipated rhythms of our family life. They're the special moments tucked into mundane everyday moments.
An Instagram follower recently summed up the heart of what I'm trying to say, "I have found that kids are junkies for traditions and a lot of the beautiful memories are centered around little everyday traditions." Yes! Exactly!
When our oldest son was 20 months old, we planned our first family movie night. We made a little pillow fort on the floor and munched on popcorn as we watched his sweet profile be amazed by The Lion King. The next day he said, "love fun movie". It slayed us to the core, and forevermore movie nights in our house are called "Fun Movie Night" or FMN for short.
We've learned that these rhythms create memories, a sense of security and loads of excitement in our house.
Here are some of our other favorite everyday traditions:
- Friday DIY pizza night
- Saturday fun breakfast (for us it's french toast!)
- Patio popsicles after nap time
- Garden check-in (our daily time to water our pumpkins and see how big they've grown!)
- Highs and Lows (for us, this time to recap our days usually happens as we're giving the boys their baths)
I'd love to hear about your family's everyday traditions, too!
BONUS: Ask your child to create a Just Because entry in your journal to highlight one of these special rhythms you enjoy together.
